He is survived by his wife, Penny; two sons, Eric Snow of Potsdam and Jamie Snow of Hermon; two stepdaughters, Shelby Hughes and companion Rick Garlick of Woodbridge, VA and Heather and husband Adam Nestor of Fort Belvoir, VA; three grandchildren, Mackenzie, Nolan and Jacob; two brothers, Terrance Snow of Hermon, and Dana and wife Bonnie Snow of Ogdensburg; two sisters, Michaelle “Mickey” and husband Al Gossi of Idaho and April and husband Stephen Allen of Hermon; and his parents, D. Edward and Inez Snow of Hermon.
He was born in Canton on March 19, 1961 to D. Edward Snow and Inez Baxter. He graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School in 1979. He then served in the U.S. Navy from 1979-1985 and then the U.S. Coast Guard from 1985-1989. He attended the NY State Police Academy in Albany and was initially stationed in Troop A and Troop K before serving Troop B in Gouverneur, starting in December 1990. On February 23, 2002 he married Penny Ayen. A prior marriage to Rhonda Newcombe ended in friendship.
In 2004, he received training for hazardous and radioactive material transportation and safety violations to serve in the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit.
He was a member of the Long Pond Hunting Club in Fine. He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid tool collector.
He was electrocuted Sunday while changing a tire on an antique fire truck on the Prescott Bridge. He was on duty at the time.
Comments/Citation:
New York State Police Trooper Shawn Snow died in the line of duty on Sunday, August 3, 2008, when he was electrocuted while assisting a driver change a flat tire on an antique fire truck in Ogdensburg. As Trooper Snow and the truck's driver worked on the tire, the fire truck's ladder came in contact with overhead power lines. Trooper Snow and the truck's driver were both killed instantly. Trooper Snow, a 19-year veteran of the force, is the 116th New York state trooper to die in the line of duty. Snow was a graduate of Hermon-DeKalb Central School, DeKalb Junction, and also served six years in the Navy and four years in the Coast Guard. He joined the state police in October 1989. He is survived by his wife Penny, sons Eric and Jamie, step-children Shelby, Heather and Tony Hughes, his parents Ed and Inez Snow, as well as two brothers, two sisters, and three grandchildren. Trooper Snow was also a long serving member of AAST.
