Trooper Roy Jones was killed in an automobile accident while responding to assist the Markleville town marshal and a Madison County sheriff's deputy who had stopped a vehicle they had pursued after running a stop sign.
Trooper Jones was responding with lights and siren when another car pulled out in front of him. He swerved to avoid a collision and struck a tree, killing him instantly of massive injuries.
Trooper Jones had served with the Indiana State Police for nearly three years and was assigned to the Pendleton post. He was a veteran of the US Army Special Forces during the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was survived by his wife, three sons and daughter.
While responding to a request for assistance from the Markleville Town Marshal, Trooper Jones was traveling at a high rate of speed with emergency lights on when a car pulled in front of him. Trooper Jones swerved to avoid the car in his path when his vehicle struck a tree, killing him on impact.
