Colonel Steve McCraw, Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety-Texas Highway Patrol sadly reports the death of Trooper Jeffrey Nichols.
Trooper Nichols, 27, was on routine patrol in Lamar County when for an unknown reason his patrol vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Trooper Nichols sustained fatal injuries in the crash and died at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. There were no witnesses to the crash and the incident was reported by a passing motorist.
Trooper Nichols had served the Texas Department of Public Safety for five years. He was stationed in Paris, Texas about 90 miles northeast of Dallas. He is survived by his parents. Trooper Nichols is the 218th Trooper to die in the line of duty since the inception of the Texas Department of Public Safety back in 1837.

Trooper Jeffrey Nichols was killed in a single vehicle crash while on patrol in Lamar County, Texas, at approximately 11:00 pm.
His patrol car left the roadway and struck a tree on FM 38, approximately one half mile north of County Road 35450, in Tigertown.
Trooper Nichols had served with the Texas Highway Patrol for five years. He is survived by his parents.
