State Trooper from Suffolk dies responding to crash
Trooper Nathan-Michael W. Smith, 27, of Henrico, Va., died following a crash in Prince George County Sept. 21.
DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State Police say a trooper responding to a fatal crash died when his patrol car ran off an Interstate 295 ramp and overturned.
State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says that shortly after 7 a.m. Monday, an eastbound 2004 Dodge pickup truck ran off U.S. 460 in Dinwiddie County and hit a guardrail. The driver, 65-year-old Donald W. Shaw of Montgomery, Louisiana, died later at Southside Regional Medical Center.
A trooper at the crash scene radioed for help. Other troopers understood the call to mean there was an officer in distress as well as a crash victim, and several responded to the scene.
Among them was 27-year-old Trooper Nathan-Michael W. Smith of Henrico, whose car crashed in Prince George County. He died at VCU Medical Center.
Trooper Smith was a member of the 121st Basic Session and graduated from the Academy June 6, 2014. The Suffolk, Va., native was assigned to the Richmond Division Area 7 Office, which includes the cities of Hopewell and Petersburg, and the counties of Dinwiddie, Nottoway and Prince George. Trooper Smith was assigned for patrol to Prince George County. He is survived by his parents, wife and two children.
Trooper Smith becomes the Department's 61st sworn employee to die in the line of duty.
