Police Officer Mark Taulbee was killed in a single-vehicle crash while pursuing a vehicle along Campbellsville Road, in Larue County, at approximately 3:25 am.
He had responded to a domestic disturbance and, upon arriving, was informed that a male subject had just taken a vehicle without permission and left the scene. Officer Taulbee pursued the vehicle at high speeds until his vehicle left the roadway and crashed.
The subject continued to flee but turned himself in later in the morning.
Officer Taulbee had served with the Hodgenville Police Department for 13 months and had previously served with the Morgan Police Department and the Butler County Sheriff?s Office. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
A Hodgenville Police officer was killed early Sunday morning during a high-speed chase in LaRue County.
Officer Mark A. Taulbee was involved in a pursuit when he crashed near the 4600 block of Campbellsville Road (KY 210) at around 3:43 a.m.
Officer Taulbee was transported to the Hardin Memorial Hospital, then flown to the University of Louisville Hospital where he died hours later from the injuries he sustained in the crash.
Kentucky State Police say Officer Taulbee was driving eastbound on KY 210 in pursuit of a silver Nissan Altima. Taulbee lost control of his cruiser and rotates clockwise, say State Police. His cruiser left the roadway on the eastbound side, struck an earth embankment on the driver?s side, went airbone and landed in a ditch facing northwest. Officer Taulbee was ejected from the cruiser even though he was wearing a seatbelt.
The suspect, Jason L. Avis, 29, from Hodgenville, KY continued on, but later turned himself in at the Larue County Jail. Avis has been arrested and charged with Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree and Fleeing or Evading Police 1st Degree. Other charges are forthcoming, say State Police.
Officer Mark Taulbee had been with the Hodgenville Police Department for 13 months. He had also been a deputy with the Butler County Sheriff?s Department for 3 years prior to his employment with Hodgenville. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and two children, Audra who is 20, and Austin, age 17.
