Donald Ziesmer was a State Trooper for the State Patrol in Minnesota, for 13 years. He died in the line of duty at age 46. He graduated from Braham High School in Braham, Minnesota, in 1945. He served in the Navy from 1945-1947 and 1952-1953. He resided in Grand Marais, Minnesota. He was making a routine traffic stop of a Van, near Tofte, Minnesota, on Highway #61. One of the suspects exited the Van and opened fire with a .22 Caliber Rifle, striking Trooper Ziesmer while he was still sitting in his cruiser. The suspect then committed suicide. Trooper Ziesmer was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Ziesmer, and a daughter, Cathryne Louise Ziesmer. He was survived by: His wife of nearly 25 years, who he married on November 28th, 1948, Barbara (Harderat) Ziesmer, of Grand Marais, Minnesota, and three daughters, JoAnn Ziesmer of Grand Marais, Minnesota, Kendall Ziesmer, of Grand Marais, Minnesota, and Deborah Ziesmer of Denver, Colorado, his mother, Martha Ziesmer of Braham, Minnesota, plus five brothers, Homer Ziesmer of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Leo Ziesmer, of Detroit, Michigan, Kenneth Ziesmer of Stanchfield, Minnesota, Floyd Ziesmer of Stanchfield, Minnesota, and Clyde Ziesmer of Braham, Minnesota, also three sisters, Ethel Genz of McGrath, Minnesota, Losi Brummer of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Caryll Parson of Anoka, Minnesota.
