John was an officer with the Michigan State Police at the Flat Rock Post. He was the 12th Michigan State Police officer to die while in the line of duty.

Trooper Cain was killed when his patrol car was struck head-on by a drunk driver fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run accident in Flat Rock, Michigan. Trooper Cain and his partner were en route to another accident call when they were struck. The drunk driver was also killed in the accident.
