The man suspected in the killing of a Massachusetts police officer was fatally shot during a gunfight with police after an hourslong standoff, WHDH-TV reports.
Jorge Zambrano, 35, of Worcester, was wanted in the death of Auburn Police Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr., 42, who was shot during a traffic stop early Sunday morning.
Tarentino was shot at about 12:30 a.m. and taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, where he was later pronounced dead.
A Massachusetts State Police trooper, an 18-year member of the force and a Navy SEAL veteran, was wounded in the shootout that killed Zambrano. He suffered a minor injury.
Police searched apartment 31, but did not locate the suspect. They then found an opening in the basement wall that allowed access to the other side of the two-family home, said McKeon.
When troopers searched the other side of the home, they came upon a second-floor bedroom. The closet door opened and Zambrano shot at troopers, McKeon said.
"He was lying in ambush waiting for them," said Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.
Police returned fire and inflicted "life-threatening injuries," McKeon said.
McKeon said the trooper was struck in the shoulder and is expected to survive his injuries.
The injured trooper is an 18-year veteran of the Massachusetts State Police and former Navy Seal. McKeon said his name would not be released Sunday.
Zambrano did have an "extensive criminal history," according to McKeon. Court records posted on the Worcester Telegram & Gazette show he was arrested a few days ago on driving charges. The newspaper also reports he pleaded guilty to drug and assault charges in 2011.
